how to decorate your bike in three easy steps

August 19, 2010

Is your bike missing that extra something? Do you feel like you could love it just a little bit more if it just cleaned itself up a bit and made an effort some of the time? Do you find yourself staring at other bikes as they pass or furtively stealing a glance at the neighbor’s model with a wee bit of envy in your eyes?

Well, despair no more. Here are three easy steps that can take your bike from blah to beautiful.

1) Go to a local crafts shop and buy a bunch of inexpensive yet sturdy flowers. Grab a handful of zipties and dig out a good pair of scissors.

2) Place the flowers on your bike in the desired location and ziptie them on. The more the better.

3) Stand back and admire your work. Well done, you.

Don’t forget to crazy glue the flower to the stem in order to avoid a flower blowing off in the wind. Head winds can be rough in my part of town (West Palm Beach, FL).

I wish I rode that fast! ;) Usually I’m not going fast enough on my way to work to threaten unhooking those flowers from the stem all too much. But it’s a great tip for windy areas!

I warn you – it’s addictive! You think you’ll add just one tiny flower here and before you know it, your bike is all decked out and you look like a flower shop on wheels.

Someone on my block has done a great job with a myriad of fake flower clusters – it’s pretty awesome. Remarkably, it’s stayed in tact in Brooklyn!
