summer cycling: it’s finally here

May 30, 2011

summer is here

Well, dare I say it? Summer is finally upon us and I couldn’t be happier. Everyone kept warning me that I would hate being in my third trimester once it’s hot, but for now, after the long months of winter here in the Midwest, I’m thrilled to be enjoying the sun and heat and lush foliage all around. I also love being able to just throw on a sundress and hop on my bike and go (the bigger I get, the nicer it is to have less layers and waistbands to deal with).

Last week, I rode the 1.5 miles to my campus library to put in some research and writing hours away from home and I stopped to take these pictures on the way. The beautiful purple flowers by my house were just too lovely to ignore.

I stopped and had Fiona model for me, doesn’t she look gorgeous with this backdrop? This was my first time riding Fiona in a long time, as I’ve been using my Peugeot Mixte for “longer” bike rides (i.e. anything between 3-10 miles). The Mixte has thinner tires and is lighter, and thus requires less effort in propelling her forward. But since I was only doing a quick 3 mile round trip to the library and back, I opted for the Raleigh Sports and her upright seating. Ah, was that upright position comfortable! I definitely noticed that it made cycling with a 31 week baby belly easier, but I also rode much slower with Fiona being a heavier bike (we’re talking about 40 lbs here).

Another new development: everytime I hopped off the bike, my belly would meet with the cupholder I have attached to the handlebars. I eventually flipped it up to create more room. I think I’ll be retiring that little accessory until my girth takes on lesser proportions. I have to laugh every time these things happen. I never thought of myself as rotund before, but every time I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror these days, the words that come to mind are “roly-poly”. I wouldn’t change it for the world though :)

Here’s to summer cycling!

You look so beautiful in that dress. I remember the baby belly also. It’s amazing what womens’ bodies go through to bring a little sunshine into this world.

You look so adorable in the photos (okay – so does Fiona – don’t want to leave her out) with the beautiful flowers. Great photos – as always. I hope the summer weather continues to be as perfect as it is in your pictures! Enjoy!

Ha, beautiful roly-poly! These photos are lovely. This past week has been stormy and cold (40’s and 50’s!) in Chicago, but today is suddenly sunny with a high of 90. I look forward to getting on my bike outside and complaining about the heat. :)

very sweet. In the first pic you don’t even see the belly bump!

I am new to following your blog and enjoy reading along. And I love that bag- where did you get it?!

Hi Vanessa and welcome to the site! It’s nice to have you here. The bag was a lucky garage sale find for a dollar. It’s a vintage Sears bag, I had to clean it up a bit when I found it but it was definitely a gem waiting to be revived. I’m all about garage sales in the summer! :)
