h & s: bike date at the cupcakerie

bikes and cupcakes

It’s about time that I add one of my bike dates to the bike date series. And what better than a bike date to the local ‘cupcakerie’? We have this cute little cupcake shop in town that makes six flavors of cupcakes fresh daily. It boasts delightful diner-style decor sprinkled generously with bike paraphernalia, cushy booth seating, and a lovely selection of house-made cupcakes. Perfect, right? So it’s kind of embarrassing to admit that I had yet to set foot in it since it opened almost a year ago. Good thing my friend H-Bomb requested a meet-up there to sample the cupcakes and enjoy a bit of catching-up with just the two of us.

H-Bomb on her bike

This is my friend H-Bomb arriving on her bike. The fact that she rode her bike to our ‘cupcake date’ is awesome in itself, but it’s even more awesome once you learn that H. is just at the end point of a year of hard chemo, radiation therapy, and a masectomy to rid her body of inflammatory breast cancer. Despite undergoing this year of medical hell, H. managed to balance being a wonderful mom to her two toddler daughters, with being a successful scientist, a great friend, and an inspirational blogger. H. began blogging to keep family and friends appraised of her situation when she learned of her breast cancer last fall. Since then her site has grown into a place where others going through the same thing can find encouragement and information on the topic. Simply put, H-Bomb is awesome and I’m honored to have her as a friend.

We had a wonderful time talking, savoring our cupcakes, and making plans for future bike outings. Now that H. is regaining her strength, she’s able to get back to cycling, which she used to do on a regular basis. H. even used to ‘drive’ her oldest daughter to and from daycare using a bike trailer. We have many exciting plans of future outings by bike involving our kids (well, as soon as mine is born and big enough to ride in a trailer), our husbands, and picnics in the park. But for now, I’m thinking that I wouldn’t mind repeating these quieter bike dates over coffee and cupcakes with great conversation just between the two of us either. Thanks for a wonderful bike date, H!

What a quaint little place. Funny enough I also took a similar photo of two little cupcakes on a plate when I visited our local cafe this past Friday. Your friend’s story is truly inspirational and I look forward to reading about many more bike dates together and with your children in tow.
